A CGPA calculator helps students calculate their Cumulative Grade Point Average accurately and quickly. You might often search for an online overall CGPA calculator. However, searches are only frustrating because most of the online tools are broken.
Whether you are filling in form details, checking eligibility, or preparing for placements, this CGPA calculator gives you instant results without manual errors.
What is CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)?
In simple terms, it is an educational grading system used to measure a student's overall academic performance for the entire duration of a course (like a B.Tech, B.Com, or School Board).
CGPA calculation formula
There are two formulas used to calculate CGPA.
Standard formula:
Credit-based formula:
If,
Grade Points = [8,7,9]
Credits = [4,3,3],
Then,
Σ(Grade×Credit)= (8×4)+(7×3)+(9×3)=32+21+27=80;
ΣCredits=10 → CGPA = 80 ÷ 10 = 8.0
These formulas form the backbone of any CGPA calculator or CGPA score calculation logic.
How to calculate CGPA
We can use both no-credit and credit-based methods to calculate CGPA. The no-credits method is simple. In this method, add grade points, then divide by the number of semesters or subjects.
You have grade points: 8, 7, 9, 8, 6
Total = 38; Subjects = 5 → CGPA = 38 ÷ 5 = 7.6
In case your college uses credits, use this formula.
Subject A: Grade 8, Credit 4 → 32
Subject B: Grade 7, Credit 3 → 21
Total points = 53; Total credits = 7 → CGPA = 53 ÷ 7 = 7.57
SGPA to CGPA Calculator
Many universities provide the results of a semester in SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) format. In order to find the final CGPA, you need to convert SGPA to CGPA.
How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA
Add the SGPA of all semesters and divide the sum by the total number of semesters.
SGPA of 4 semesters:
Semester 1: 7.2
Semester 2: 7.8
Semester 3: 8.0
Semester 4: 7.5
Total SGPA = 30.5
Total Semesters = 4
CGPA = 30.5 ÷ 4 = 7.63
This method is widely used in SGPA to CGPA calculator tools and works for standard university formats, including those looking for an SRM CGPA calculator or Anna University calculation.
Note: This simple average works effectively if all semesters have equal credits. However, for 100% official accuracy—especially for CGPA score calculation in engineering degrees—you should use the credit-weighted method supported by our tool.
How to Calculate Overall CGPA of All Semesters
An Overall CGPA Calculator is used when you want to calculate the final CGPA of all semesters at once, which is highly important for B.Tech degree certificates, university final results, and placement eligibility.
Step-by-Step: Overall CGPA of 6 Semesters (or 4 Semesters)
To get a 100% accurate overall CGPA, you must multiply each semester's SGPA by its total credits (this is called a weighted average). Here is the logic:
- Multiply each semester's SGPA by the number of credits for that semester.
- Add all of those calculated values together.
- Divide that sum by the total number of credits across all semesters.
Assuming each semester has 20 credits (120 total credits):
Your SGPA scores for Semesters 1 through 6 are:
6.8, 7.1, 7.5, 7.9, 8.0, and 7.7
Total Points = (6.8×20) + (7.1×20) + (7.5×20) + (7.9×20) + (8.0×20) + (7.7×20) = 900
Overall CGPA = 900 ÷ 120 total credits = 7.5 CGPA
Assuming each semester has 24 credits (96 total credits):
Your SGPA scores for Semesters 1 through 4 are:
8.2, 7.8, 8.5, and 8.0
Total Points = (8.2×24) + (7.8×24) + (8.5×24) + (8.0×24) = 780
Overall CGPA = 780 ÷ 96 total credits = 8.12 CGPA
Note: If every semester has the exact same number of credits, you can simply add your SGPAs together and divide by the number of semesters (a simple average). However, for official university transcripts, always use the credit-weighted method above (which our calculator does automatically!).
Semester CGPA Calculator
A Semester CGPA Calculator is useful when you want to calculate the CGPA of a particular semester instead of all semesters at once.
Semester 1 Grade Points:
Subject 1: 8
Subject 2: 7
Subject 3: 9
CGPA (Semester 1) = (8 + 7 + 9) ÷ 3 = 8.0
Repeat this process for each semester to track your academic performance and improvement over time.

- Select Mode: Click on "Subject Grades".
- Enter History (Optional): For first-semester students, this is not mandatory. For the higher semester, fill in the history box.
- Add Subjects: Enter the Grade Points (e.g., 9 or 10) and Credits (e.g., 3 or 4) of all the subjects in your current semester.
- Calculate: Click the Calculate button to see your total CGPA so far.
Method 2: In this method, you use the SGPA and credits of all the semesters so far to calculate CGPA from SGPA.
- Select Mode: Click on "Semester SGPA".
- Add Semesters: Enter the SGPA and Total Credits for each semester you have completed so far, one by one.
- Check Result: The tool will calculate your overall CGPA.
