The Three Types of "NDA Fees" — And Why People Get Confused
When someone searches "NDA fees", they could mean three completely different things. Let us clear this up first before anything else.
| What People Ask |
What It Actually Means |
Amount |
| NDA exam fees |
Fee to apply for the UPSC NDA written exam |
₹100 (one time) |
| NDA 3-year training fees |
Cost of studying and living at NDA during training |
₹0 — government pays |
| Initial deposit upon joining |
The money you deposit when you first report to NDA |
₹41,495 |
These three are completely separate. Mixing them up leads to a lot of unnecessary panic.
NDA Exam Fees
The NDA exam fees for NDA-II 2026 are ₹100. This is a one-time, non-refundable application fee.
Some candidates pay nothing at all — SC/ST candidates, female candidates, and wards of JCOs, NCOs, or ORs studying in Military or Sainik Schools are fully exempt from paying the fee.
NDA 3 Year Training Fees — The Answer Surprises Most People
The NDA 3-year training fees are zero. You read that right.
When you get selected and join NDA, the Government of India covers your accommodation, food, books, uniforms, and medical treatment. You do not pay for any of these things.
What you are responsible for is your personal and pocket expenses — things like toiletries, phone recharges, and small personal purchases. The official notification estimates these will typically not exceed ₹3,000 per month.
Now here is how the pocket money works. When you join, you deposit ₹41,495 as a one-time amount (explained in the next section).
Out of that deposit, ₹20,000 is set aside specifically for your pocket allowance — calculated as 5 months × ₹4,000. The institution releases this back to you at ₹4,000 per month over those five months.
This is your own money coming back to you in instalments — not a government payment. Since your personal expenses are around ₹3,000 per month and you are receiving ₹4,000 per month from your own deposit, your day-to-day spending is covered with a small margin.
What if your family cannot afford the ₹41,495 deposit at joining?
Everyone who joins NDA is required to pay the full ₹41,495 deposit at the time of reporting — there is no exemption from this.
However, if your parents earn less than ₹45,000 per month, you can apply for government financial assistance of ₹2,500 per month during training.
If this aid is sanctioned, a portion of your initial deposit becomes refundable. The exact refund amount and process is confirmed at the time of joining — the notification says to apply through your District Magistrate, who forwards the request to the Commandant, NDA, Khadakwasla, Pune.
Initial Deposit at Joining — What Is It and Where Does It Go?
When you first report to NDA, you deposit ₹41,495. This is not a training fee — it is a one-time deposit that gets allocated toward specific purposes as per the official notification.
Here is exactly where the ₹41,495 goes:
| Purpose |
Amount |
| Pocket allowance — 5 months at ₹4,000 per month |
₹20,000 |
| Army Group Insurance Fund contribution |
₹7,200 |
| Incidental expenses for the first semester |
₹14,295 |
| Total |
₹41,495 |
Two additional costs — clothing and equipment — are communicated to you separately at the time of joining instructions and are not included in the ₹41,495 figure above. You will be told those exact amounts when you receive your joining letter.
The ₹20,000 pocket allowance portion is released back to you at ₹4,000 per month over five months.
The ₹7,200 goes to the Army Group Insurance Fund, which insures you during training. The ₹14,295 covers incidental expenses in your first semester at the academy.
If government financial assistance is sanctioned to you after joining, a portion of this deposit is refundable — the notification confirms this, but the exact amount is worked out based on your individual case at the time.
NDA Salary During Training — You Start Getting Paid From Day One
This is something a lot of people do not know. From the very first day you join NDA, you receive a fixed monthly stipend.
Stipend during training: ₹56,100 per month
This is Pay Level 10 as per the 7th Pay Commission. This amount stays the same throughout your three years at NDA and continues during your pre-commissioning training at IMA (for Army), INA (for Navy), or AFA (for Air Force).
One important point — your time at NDA is training, not commissioned service. Your official rank and seniority as an officer begin from the day you are commissioned, not from the day you joined NDA. This means your years at NDA do not count toward your service record as an officer.
However, there is a financial benefit built into this. Certain allowances are technically applicable even during the training period, but are not paid month by month while you are a cadet.
Instead, once you are commissioned as an officer, the government calculates the total allowance amount owed to you for the entire training period and pays it to you as a lump sum. So you do not lose out financially — you just receive that amount later, all at once.
NDA Salary After Commissioning — Rank-Wise Pay
After you finish all your training and get commissioned as an officer, your salary changes based on your rank. Below is the complete pay structure as per the official UPSC notification.
Army Rank-Wise Pay

| Captain |
Lieutenant |
Flight Lieutenant |
| Major |

Air Commodore |
| Major General |
Rear Admiral |
Air Vice Marshal |
| Lieutenant General |
Vice Admiral |
Air Marshal |

Air Chief Marshal |
Note on 8th Pay Commission: The 8th Pay Commission is expected to revise salaries across the board, including defence. No official revised figures have been announced yet. When they are implemented, basic pay and allowances will be updated — but until then, the 7th Pay Commission figures above remain in effect.
Military Service Pay — An Extra Fixed Amount Every Officer Gets
On top of basic pay, every officer from the rank of Lieutenant up to Brigadier gets a fixed extra amount called Military Service Pay (MSP) — ₹15,500 per month.
This amount does not change with rank. A fresh Lieutenant and a Brigadier both get the same ₹15,500 MSP. It is paid to recognise that military service comes with conditions and responsibilities that a regular government job does not.
NDA Salary Per Month — What You Actually Take Home
Your NDA salary per month is not just the basic pay figure. Multiple components add up to your final in-hand amount. Here is a realistic estimate for a fresh Lieutenant posted at a peace station:
| Component |
Amount |
| Basic Pay |
₹56,100 |
| Military Service Pay |
₹15,500 |
| Dearness Allowance (DA) |
Revised by the government twice a year — calculated as a percentage of basic pay |
| Transport Allowance |
₹7,200 + DA on top of it |
| House Rent Allowance (HRA) |
Depends on which city you are posted in |
| Approximate In-Hand (Peace Posting) |
₹75,000 – ₹90,000 |
This estimate is for a peace posting with no field allowances. Officers posted to border areas, high altitude zones, or counter-insurgency regions earn significantly more because of additional allowances on top of this.
Allowances — This Is Where the Real Difference Comes In
Basic pay is just one part of an NDA officer's earnings. Depending on where you are posted, allowances can add 40% to 60% on top of your basic pay.
Field Area Allowances
If you are posted to difficult or high-risk areas, you get additional monthly allowances. Here are the amounts as per the official notification:
| Type of Posting |
Officers — Monthly Amount |
| Siachen (highest category) |
₹42,500 |
| High Risk, High Hardship |
₹25,000 |
| High Risk, Medium Hardship |
₹16,900 |
| High Risk, Low Hardship |
₹5,300 |
| Medium Risk, Medium Hardship |
₹10,500 |
| Low Risk, High Hardship |
₹5,300 |
Since Dearness Allowance crossed 50% from 1 January 2024, all DA-linked allowances are now calculated at an enhanced rate of 25%. This means these amounts are already at the revised higher rate.
Other Regular Allowances
| Allowance |
Amount |
| Para Allowance (for paratroopers) |
₹10,500 per month |
| Special Forces Allowance |
₹25,000 per month |
| Dress Allowance |
₹20,000 per year |
| Children's Education Allowance |
₹2,250 per month per child (up to 2 children) |
| Hostel Subsidy for children |
₹6,750 per month per child (up to 2 children) |
NDA Air Force Salary — Is It Different From the Army?
This is one of the most common points of confusion. The short answer is no — at the entry level, NDA Air Force salary is the same as the Army and Navy.
Basic pay, Military Service Pay, Dearness Allowance, and Transport Allowance are identical for all three services. The pay matrix does not change based on which service you join.
What does differ:
- Officers in the Air Force Flying Branch get a Flying Allowance, which adds a significant amount to their monthly pay.
- Candidates who do not clear the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS), or who wear glasses and fall under the Habitual Wearing of Glasses (HWG) category, can still join the Air Force — but in Ground Duty branches instead of Flying.
- Ground Duty (Technical) and Ground Duty (Non-Technical) officers follow the same pay structure but do not receive the Flying Allowance.
The financial difference between services comes later in your career, based on posting-specific allowances — not at the time of joining.
NDA Courses — What Degree Do You Get After Training?
NDA is not just military training. You come out with a proper university degree too. Here is what each wing gets, as per the official notification:
| Wing / Stream |
Degree |
When It Is Awarded |
| Army |
B.Sc. / B.Sc. (Computer) / B.A. |
After completing NDA |
| Navy |
B.Tech |
After pre-commissioning training at INA |
| Air Force (B.Tech stream) |
B.Tech |
After pre-commissioning training at AFA or Air Force Technical College |
| Air Force (B.Sc stream) |
B.Sc. / B.Sc. (Computer) |
After completing NDA |
| Naval Academy (10+2 Cadet Entry) |
B.Tech |
After completing the 4-year course at INA |
All degrees — whether B.Sc., B.A., or B.Tech — are awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
NDA Army, NDA Navy, NDA Air Force — What Happens After NDA Training
After you complete your three years at NDA, your path splits based on which service you belong to.
NDA Army
Army cadets go to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun for one year of pre-commissioning training.
This training is physically demanding and focused on preparing you to lead soldiers. After successfully completing IMA, you are commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant, subject to being medically fit.
NDA Navy
Naval cadets go to the Indian Naval Academy (INA) in Ezhimala, Kerala, for further training. After completion, you are commissioned in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy.
NDA Air Force
Air Force cadets go to different institutions depending on which branch they are joining:
- Flying Branch and Ground Duty Non-Technical → Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad
- Ground Duty Technical → Air Force Technical College, Bengaluru
Flying Branch cadets go through a total of 1.5 years of flying training. After one year of basic flying training, they are granted Permanent Commission on probation as Flying Officers.
Full confirmation of commission happens after they complete the flying conversion course, a 6-month period. Ground Duty Branch cadets are also commissioned as Flying Officers on probation after finishing their training at AFA.
How Fast Do You Get Promoted? — The Promotion Timeline
One of the biggest practical advantages of the NDA career is that promotions up to a certain rank are time-based — not purely on competition.
Here is the minimum service required for each rank as per the official notification:
| Rank |
Minimum Service Needed |
| Lieutenant |
On commissioning — you start here |
| Captain |
2 years |
| Major |
6 years |
| Lieutenant Colonel |
13 years |
| Colonel (Time Scale) |
26 years — guaranteed |
| Colonel (Selection) |
Based on merit and selection |
| Brigadier and above |
Selection only |
Up to Lieutenant Colonel, you are promoted based on years of service, as long as you do not have any major disciplinary issues.
Colonel at 26 years is also time-based and virtually guaranteed. Beyond Colonel, it becomes competitive — selection boards decide based on your service record and performance.
Most officers retire at the rank of Colonel or Brigadier after 20 to 26 years of service, with a full pension for life.
Highest Salary of an NDA Officer
The highest salary of an NDA officer is ₹2,50,000 per month — the fixed pay of the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, or Chief of Air Staff. This sits at Level 18 in the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix.
Reaching this position takes 35 to 40 years of distinguished service. There are very few slots at the top — only one Chief per service at any given time.
What You Get After Retirement
The career does not end when you retire. NDA officers receive several long-term benefits:
- Pension — a monthly pension for life, based on your last pay drawn and total years of service. A Colonel retiring after 26 years draws a solid monthly pension.
- Gratuity — a lump sum paid at the time of retirement.
- ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) — lifetime medical coverage for you and your family.
- CSD (Canteen Stores Department) — lifelong access to subsidised goods through canteen facilities.
- Army Group Insurance — you are covered with insurance of ₹1.25 crore during your service as per the official notification.
State Government Scholarships for NDA Cadets
Several state governments provide additional financial support to cadets who are selected for the NDA. These are separate from the central government benefits and vary by state.
Here are the scholarships listed directly in the official NDA-II 2026 notification:
